What Does -3 Spread Mean?

A -3 spread means your team must win by more than three points for your bet to win. Here’s how it works for you to bank: win by exactly three and a standard two-way spread bet pushes: your stake comes back. Win by one or two—or lose outright—and your bet loses.

That distinction produces a familiar scene: your team kicks the winning field goal, everyone celebrates, and you sit there calculating whether the evening has accomplished anything. Winning the game and covering the spread are separate jobs.

Suppose your ticket reads Baltimore -3 (-110). Here is how it settles:

Final scoreBaltimore’s marginYour -3 bet
Baltimore 27, Cincinnati 20+7Wins
Baltimore 24, Cincinnati 21+3Pushes; stake returned
Baltimore 23, Cincinnati 21+2Loses
Baltimore 20, Cincinnati 24-4Loses

Subtract three from Baltimore’s final score. If Baltimore still leads, you win. If the adjusted scores tie, you push. DraftKings’ general rules explicitly use a three-point spread and a 13–10 result to illustrate a push.

The Two Minus Signs Mean Different Things

In Baltimore -3 (-110), the first number sets the handicap. The second sets the payout.

At -110, you risk $110 to win $100. A winning bet returns $210, including your original stake. A push returns $110. A loss returns nothing.

You do not lose three dollars, receive three points or need Baltimore to score three touchdowns. You are laying three points and paying the quoted price for that wager.

At -110, the break-even winning percentage is 52.38% among bets that produce a win or loss, excluding pushes. That comes from $110 divided by $210. At -120, it rises to 54.55%. Identical spreads can therefore have materially different costs.

Why -2.5, -3 and -3.5 Are Different Bets

Your selectionTeam wins by exactly three
-2.5Win
-3Push
-3.5Loss

A three-point victory creates three different outcomes:

The half-point is called the hook. At -3.5, it removes the protection you had at -3. At -2.5, a three-point win becomes a winning ticket.

For a real scoreboard example, Kansas City beat Philadelphia 38–35 in Super Bowl LVII. Applied to that result, hypothetical Chiefs tickets at -2.5, -3 and -3.5 would win, push and lose respectively. Those are illustrative handicaps, not a claim about that game’s actual closing spread.

Three deserves particular attention in football because a field goal is worth three points. However, do not confuse the frequency of three-point finishes across an entire league with the probability that your selected favorite wins by exactly three. Those are different measurements. A leaguewide statistic alone cannot tell you what buying the hook is worth.

A Better Spread Can Come With a Worse Price

Suppose one sportsbook offers -3 at -110 and another offers -2.5 at -130. The second ticket has a better handicap but a more expensive price. Whether it represents better value depends on the probabilities of winning by exactly three, winning by four or more, and failing to cover either number.

Here is a simpler comparison: at equal stakes, -3 (-110) is unambiguously better than -3.5 (-110) under identical settlement rules. Every outcome that wins at -3.5 also wins at -3, while an exact three-point victory returns your stake instead of losing it.

A subsequent line movement does not rewrite an accepted fixed-odds ticket. If you placed -3 and the market closes -3.5, your wager remains -3. Check the accepted bet confirmation, particularly when the app asks you to approve changed odds.

Read the Market Label

The explanation above applies to a standard two-way point spread. A three-way handicap market includes a separate handicap-draw selection; an adjusted tie does not necessarily refund your team selection.

Likewise, a first-half -3 wager concerns the first half, not the final score. Overtime treatment depends on the sport and market rules.

A push inside a parlay also differs from a standalone refund. DraftKings’ general rules say the stake stays on the remaining parlay legs. Do not assume the entire ticket is refunded because one selection lands exactly on its spread.

The number matters. So does the price—and the small label above both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does -3 spread mean the team is the favorite?

Yes, in that spread market it is giving three points. An alternate spread may differ from the main market’s handicap.

What happens if my -3 team wins by exactly three?

A standard two-way straight spread bet pushes, returning your stake without profit.

Is +3 the opposite of -3?

Yes. A +3 selection wins if its team wins outright or loses by fewer than three, pushes on a three-point loss, and loses on a larger defeat.
